Traditions.

My grandmother moved to the United States following WWII bringing with her some amazing traditions from her native England. She was a master gardener, producing an amazing rose garden. She could tell you about each rose bush and I remember her explaining to me, when I was far too young to understand, all about pruning, planting and caring for them. Her garden produced these great blooms and I remember that often she would cut them just at the base of the rose and float them in beautiful cut-glass bowls or dishes that matched her teas set. Simple and lovely.

Today the tradition is alive. We are seeing "floating flowers" more and more used in centerpieces for weddings and special events. Even flowers fully submerged in water are popular. Check out these great arrangements. A new twist on an old tradition. I think my grandmother would approve!

Happy Birthday June!

If you have a June birthday your birth flower is....the ROSE! Worried that you are not very original? Think again. Roses come in some amazing varieties and colors.

They also each have their own meaning based on their color. Here's a few of the most popular.

Red - There is no better way to say "I love you" than with a classic red rose, the traditional symbol of beauty and romance. Red roses are synonymous with particularly deep feelings of affection and have also come to represent courage, sincerity, passion and respect.

Pink - Available in a range of shades from hot pink to a subtle, pale pink hue, the pink rose is one of the rose's most versatile varieties. As compared to their red counterparts, pink roses often convey feelings of love in a gentler fashion or express appreciation or sympathy. Pink roses are also a symbol of grace and elegance.

White - Create an atmosphere of purity and spirituality with a white rose. With their aura of innocence and honor, white roses have become popular wedding roses and are often used to symbolize new beginnings or as a tribute to a departed loved one.
Yellow - Their perpetually cheerful appearance helps yellow roses to represent friendship and happiness. In some cultures, however, yellow roses are also symbolic of dying love, jealousy or infidelity. Nevertheless, yellow roses are generally popular because of their positive meanings, and are often used to send messages of goodwill such as "Thank You" or "Welcome Back."

Orange - Cultivated in a variety of shades from vibrant citrus to pastel peach, orange roses reflect enthusiasm and growing passion. Lighter shades of orange roses often represent feelings of a budding romance, while more vivid shades symbolize a deep, passionate desire.

Lavender - Due to their rarity and eye-catching appearance, lavender roses are the rose of choice for those looking to get noticed. A time-honored symbol of enchantment, lavender roses are a perfect way to express feelings of love at first sight, parental love, and a beautiful world of possibilities.

Brown – Brown roses decorate any affair in a surprising, unique way. These roses come in a wide-range of tones and shades, from russet, to cafĂ© ole and from smoky to iced tea. Brown roses are a beautiful way to show a man that you love him – they are intimate and romantic, while also showing a masculine appeal. In addition, brown roses convey a feeling of warmth and stability and are a great way to thank someone for a job well done.

Hot Pink – Hot pink roses are symbolic of gratitude and appreciation and are a great way to tell someone that they possess a sense of vibrant femininity. They are prefect for telling your significant other that you find her exciting, while simultaneously indicating a sense of appreciation and admiration.
Happy Birthday June!

Time to Garden!

I'm working on growing a green thumb. I'm not good at plants...can you believe they let me work at a flower shop!?!!? So, this summer I'm starting by planting a few containers and maybe next year I'll move on to a full fledged garden. So, I've been doing some research, gathering ideas. Check out what I found...not really your average garden, but fun!
